Kvartetten visningsrom fortsetter med å stille ut samtidskunst i fire av Tungegårdens/Fargespills vinduer i gågata. Lørdag 15. august dukker det opp en ny utstilling i vinduene!
Kunstnerne som er invitert til å stille ut med Kvartetten er profesjonelle, og bor i – eller har tilknytning til Østfold. Ved å bruke vinduene når vi ut til mange, også de som sjelden eller aldri går på et galleri. Vi ønsker også å skape en spennende visuell opplevelse i byen vår.
Utstillingsrommene er i fire av de store vinduene som vender ut mot bybrua og krysset mellom Svenskegata og Storgata, på den lille trekantede plassen med bysten av Peder Kolbjørnsen. Utstillingene skal oppleves fra gateplan.
I felt like something beautiful
Denne månedens kunstner heter Nicolas William Hughes. Han er opprinnelig fra Wales, men bor nå i Moss etter først å ha bodd i Halden noen år. Nic arbeider med konseptuell – eller idebasert kunst. Han undersøker hvordan vi mennesker forstår naturen, og forbindelsen mellom mennesker og ikke menneskelige vesener. Nic uttrykker seg med foto, video og installasjoner. I det siste har han jobbet med en serie fotografier, videoarbeider og tekst, disse arbeidene har han samlet under tittelen; «I felt like something beautiful». På Kvartetten skal han vise makrofotografier av ville blomster. Disse har han fotografert etter at han lot deler av hagen vokse fritt. Nic er spesielt opptatt av begrepet «vill», og hvorfor vi bruker dette ordet/begrepet for å beskrive noe som ikke er forbundet med eller styrt av mennesker. Nic forteller at arbeidene som vises er en «Homage» til disse ville individene.
Nicolas William Hughes (b.1984)
I am a conceptual artist from South Wales. I lived and worked in Østfold, Norway for 5 years, first residing in Halden and later relocating to Moss, where I currently live.
My practice explores the understanding of nature, and the connection between humans and nonhuman entities. With my works I aim to explore underlying concerns that challenge our understanding of our place in the ‘natural world’. I have decided in recent years to engage my professional career towards developing works which form questions of social norms, common knowledge and unknowns with a focus on our connection/disconnection to, or our being a part of a much larger ecosystem. Through my practice I seek out connections or parallels between human society and non-human species and create art works that highlight these links, differences, or separations. My research is a tentative balance between varying disciplines, from contemporary politics, sciences, ecology, philosophy and contemporary theoretical theory.
I often use humour as a tool which adds an element of openness to my work, my aim is that my art works are accessible to all, easily read but layered with underlying questions and queries. My practice over time has incorporated many media, my background is based on photography and video, but my practice has diversified to focus on a more conceptual approach to the artistic medium. As such, artworks I have created in recent times are not medium specific, and instead the medium used depends on the topics / addresses. My practice includes creating installation works, performances, community-based projects, writing, films and artworks using new digital technology.
About the work on display:
I have been and am currently working on of an ongoing series of photography, video works and texts under the collective title I felt like something beautiful. The specific focus for this series is on the study of the term “wild”, I have been creating new artworks which try to query what it is to be “wild” and why we use the term to describe matter that is not connected to or governed by humans.
The works on display kvartetten visningsrom are macro photographs of wildflowers found in my garden in Jeløya. This year I chose to leave a 10 x 10 metre area in the garden to go “wild”, that is to say, I did not cut the grass or tend to the area in anyway. I watched this are become taken over by wildflowers, insects, birds and other flora and fauna. The work on display is a homage to these wild entities.

Kvartetten består av fire profesjonelle kunstnere fra Halden: Maja Sjøstrøm, som også er initiativtager, Trond Arne Vangen (Spinneriet), Øivind Koppang Eriksen og Elise Jarem.
